The voice‑over world is full of opportunities, but it’s become a target for scammers who know most of us work remotely and communicate with clients online. Staying aware of their scams can save you a lot of time, money, and frustration.

Common Scams to Watch Out For

1. The Overpayment Scam

A “client” sends you more money than agreed and asks you to refund the difference.
Their payment later bounces, and you’re left covering the loss.

“Real” clients don’t overpay ever

2. “You Need to Buy Our Equipment”

They claim you need to purchase specific equipment or software from their “approved vendor.”
The vendor is part of the scam.

Legitimate clients don’t need you to buy equipment from them.

3. Suspicious Casting Emails That Arrive Out of Nowhere

Red flags include:

Vague project details and odd grammar

No references from other voice actors that have worked for them in the past

Minimal or no online presence i.e. LinkedIn, Facebook ect.

Extremely high pay for minimal work

If the message feels generic or too good to be true, it usual is. Trust your instincts.

4. Fake NDAs Asking for Personal Info

Scammers can and will send official‑looking documents to collect your address, ID, or banking details.

Real NDAs don’t require revealing sensitive personal information.

5. “Record Everything First, We’ll Pay Later”

They ask you to record the job from the beginning with no deposit.
You send the audio and they disappear into cyber space.

Always secure payment before recording large and smaller projects.

How to Protect Yourself

Research every new client and ask for references.

Use secure payment methods and avoid checks and money orders, unless you’ve done business with them before.

Trust your gut instincts when something seems suspicious

Stay connected with VO groups that share scam stories and alerts

Staying informed doesn’t mean being paranoid; it t means protecting yourself and your income. Your work is valuable, and crooks shouldn’t get a piece of it.
